Melat is a graduate of American University, Washington College of Law, where she was a member of the IP Brief and Health Law and Policy Brief. During law school, she studied all aspects of intellectual property law, including the following courseworK: Patent Law, Patent Prosecution, Patent Litigation, Post Grant Proceedings, IP Practice at the USITC, Pharmaceuticals and the Law, Hatch-Waxman Litigation, and IP in the Multilateral System.
Melat placed particular emphasis on drafting and prosecuting patent applications in areas of life sciences and biotechnology. She also studied the legal, economic, and political issues surrounding intellectual property law.
Prior to law school, Melat obtained a B.S. in Biology from Bridgewater College, where she conducted undergraduate research in determining if LL-37:DNA complexes can also activate endothelial cells, setting the foundation for understanding of ICAM-1 expression in psoriasis for other undergraduate researchers. She also has experience working as a Research Assistant and as an Intellectual Property Administrator.
